Uzbekistan

The Fergana Valley, a region in Central Asia spreading across eastern Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, was once an important stop on the Silk Road. It is a fertile and abundant valley, known for the production of high-quality silk. From the lush silks of the region, Uzbeki women created exquisitely embroidered textiles in different shapes and patterns that served both as decorative items and as protective covers for their possessions. On a recent trip to the Fergana Valley we were greeted excitedly by class of young girls, eager to practice their English and hear stories of America. As we laughed and talked with them, I could imagine girls just like these, working side-by-side with their mothers to stitch and embroider beautiful textiles like the ones we had collected on our trip – mafrash bags, suzanis, ikats, brazier covers, pillows, blankets, and rugs. The wonder and curiosity of these girls reflected the creativity, the resourcefulness, and the spirit of the Uzbeki women who had come before them.

Ikats

The word "ikat" means "to bind" and it has come to describe both a very ancient weaving technique and the vibrant fabrics that are created through this special craft. These exquisite textiles were once used in ceremonial dress, to decorate the entrances of homes, and to symbolize wealth and prestige. Today, they are considered a form of art. You can bring the magic of the ikat into your home or business as wall hangings, pillows, table runners, framed artwork and more. View details...

Suzanis

"Suzani" is the Persian or Farsi word for needle and refers to textile panels embroidered with silk thread. The suzani was an integral part of a woman's artistic expression in Central Asia for hundreds of years. Traditionally, as soon as a girl was born her mother would start embroidering the suzani for her. As the daughter grew older, she would join in the process. The suzani would eventually become a part of her dowry and be used to decorate her home. These intricate and lovingly-made textiles can be used in so many ways to add texture, romance, and delight to any room. View details...
