The retablo art form traces its origins to Spain, and was perfected in Peru by Ayacucho artisans who saw it as a way to combine their religious traditions with those of Spanish-imposed Catholicism. Retablos have been among my favorite discoveries in Peru and throughout the world, and I have several adorning my own home.

Peru’s colonial period is reflected in wooden artifacts that are ornately carved, soundly constructed and often painted with bright colors. Today, many of these colors have mellowed to a rich, rustic patina. Alongside the tradition of painting wooden objects, many Peruvian adornments – such as our massive chapel door – were left in their natural state.

While hiking through a wet, muddy tract, our guides – a mother and son -– walked ahead of us and chopped down banana leaves. It was the perfect way for mom, dad and me to cross the Peruvian muck.
